With five models having received the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick + award from the IIHS in 2022, Volkswagen is one of the automakers offering the safest vehicles on Canadian roads. Here are some of the most impressive technologies they use to keep their passengers safe at all times.
The Travel Assist system
Many Volkswagen vehicles can be ordered with the Travel Assist system which combines the capabilities of the adaptive cruise control and the lane keeping assist system in order to offer semi-autonomous driving in certain conditions on select highways. This makes long road trips safer and more relaxing for the driver by taking care of the speed and most of the steering of the vehicle, thus reducing fatigue. This system can help prevent the vehicle from exiting the road due to driver inattention and it is capable of constantly maintaining a safe distance behind the car in front, even when the speed of traffic varies.
The rear cross-traffic alert with blind-spot monitor
This technology is offered in many Volkswagen models in order to help prevent accidents that happen when backing up or when changing lanes. By using sensors mounted in the rear, these two systems can “see” where the driver can’t in order to warn about the presence of another vehicle either contained within the blind spot or arriving from the side when the transmission is in reverse. The rear cross-traffic alert system is very helpful when exiting a parking space where the driver’s visibility is reduced since it sends a clear alert when an accident is at risk of happening.
The front collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection
Many Volkswagen vehicles are equipped with the forward collision warning system which can detect other vehicles, large objects, pedestrians or cyclists. If this system determines that an impact is likely, it alerts the driver and then applies the brakes on its own if the driver doesn’t react quickly enough. This contributes to avoiding many impacts and lessening those that are unavoidable.
