The vehicle not only embodies Volkswagen's commitment to sustainability but also keeps an eye on performance and driving pleasure.
A Legacy Reimagined 48 Years Later
Almost five decades after the first Golf GTI made its debut, the ID. GTI Concept is set to carry the torch. Based on the ID. 2all, a cost-effective electric compact car, the new concept ensures that the GTI lineage is ready for the electric age. The ID. GTI Concept is more than just a prototype; it will go into production, maintaining its core GTI features alongside new electric functionalities. Its dynamic capabilities are managed by a front-axle differential lock, electronically controlled by a Vehicle Dynamics Manager. This tech upgrade has led to a slight tweak in the GTI acronym; the "I" now also stands for "intelligence," signaling the vehicle's high-performance drivetrain and chassis.
Melding Tradition and Innovation
The ID. GTI Concept doesn't forsake its roots. Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen, and Andreas Mindt, Head of Design, both emphasize the vehicle's balance of driving pleasure, sustainability, and accessibility. The car also maintains iconic GTI design elements, such as a red radiator grille surround and specific wheel designs. Inside the car, the three-spoke steering wheel and GTI Experience Control are nods to classic GTIs. This control system allows drivers to customize multiple vehicle features, including simulated shift points modeled after historic GTI versions.
Yet, modernity is not left behind. Large 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels and a long wheelbase contribute to a compact but dynamic design. The vehicle's interior pairs nostalgia with the future, offering a digital cockpit and an augmented reality head-up display. These provide configurable interfaces for both the driver and passenger. Moreover, the ID. GTI Concept is equipped for racetrack driving, featuring a special mode tailored for the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit. Infotainment and air-conditioning controls are also near-production ready, offering intuitive interfaces and ergonomic seating.
The ID. GTI Concept is a bridge between Volkswagen's storied past and its electrified future, promising a vehicle that honors tradition while embracing modern technology.
