At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, Volkswagen announced a significant innovation in automotive technology. The company unveiled the integration of the artificial intelligence-based chatbot, ChatGPT, into its vehicles. This integration, a first for a volume manufacturer, marks a significant step in enhancing the in-car experience with advanced AI capabilities.
Integration of ChatGPT into Volkswagen's IDA Voice Assistant
Volkswagen has integrated ChatGPT into its IDA voice assistant, a move set to revolutionize driver and vehicle interaction. This integration is made possible through Cerence Chat Pro, provided by technology partner Cerence Inc. Starting from the second quarter of 2024, many Volkswagen production vehicles will feature ChatGPT as a standard component. This feature will be available in models including ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, Tiguan, Passat, and the new Golf.
The integration of ChatGPT extends the capabilities of the IDA voice assistant beyond traditional functions like controlling infotainment, navigation, and air conditioning. It now allows for intuitive language interaction and access to a wide range of information, all hands-free. This includes receiving vehicle-specific information and responding to general knowledge questions.
Seamless User Experience with Enhanced Data Protection
Volkswagen emphasizes user convenience and data protection in this new feature. Drivers do not need to create a new account or install a new app to access ChatGPT. The voice assistant is activated by a simple voice command or a button on the steering wheel. Importantly, the system ensures the highest level of data protection. Questions and answers are immediately deleted after processing, with no access to vehicle data by ChatGPT.
Cerence Chat Pro facilitates this integration, leveraging various sources, including ChatGPT. It prioritizes security and seamless integration with IDA's functionalities, providing an easy and secure user experience.
Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management at Volkswagen Brand for Technical Development, expressed the company's commitment to democratizing technology. "We are proud to be the first volume manufacturer to standardize this innovative technology in our vehicles, from compact models upwards. This integration exemplifies our commitment to innovation and adding value for our drivers."
Meanwhile, Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, highlighted the partnership's strength. "Our collaboration with Volkswagen allows us to bring generative AI and large language models to customers, enhancing their driving experience. This integration exemplifies our focus on security, customization, and ease of deployment in automotive-grade AI solutions."
