The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas has received significant improvements compared to last year. It has a new front fascia, a new and even more luxurious interior, and it comes standard with 4Motion all-wheel drive. These improvements have allowed it to remain the benchmark in the midsize SUV segment when it comes to overall luxury and performance, but it is also a very impressive SUV in terms of how it compares to other models.
One competitor has been redesigned this year, and that is the Kia Sorento. The new 2021 Kia Sorento is more spacious and has a lot to offer, but it is a lot smaller than the Volkswagen Atlas, it comes standard with front-wheel drive, it doesn't have the performance of the Atlas, and it doesn't have the towing capacity either. In terms of price difference, there isn't a huge gap either. Here are three reasons to purchase a Volkswagen Atlas instead of a Kia Sorento.
It has a lot more cargo space
The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas is bigger than the Kia Sorento with a wheelbase that measures almost 100 mm more. That is a significant difference, and you will notice it when you are on the road. You have more 2nd row and 3rd row legroom, and you also have a lot more cargo space with the Volkswagen Atlas offering 2,791 L compared to 2,139 L for the Sorento. That's a 600 L difference which means you almost get a second SUV with your Atlas compared to the Sorento. When all seats are in place, the Sorento has 357 L of cargo space while the atlas has 563.
It has better performance
There is a considerable difference in terms of performance as well. The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas can either be powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, or a 3.6 L V6 which delivers 276 horsepower. The base engine in the Kia Sorento is a four-cylinder that delivers just 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. The difference is staggering with the base engine in the Atlas. That said, the second engine in the Sorento lineup is a bit closer with 281 horsepower. But it is not a V6, it is a turbocharged 4-cylinder
It has more towing capacity
The difference between the V6 and the turbocharged four-cylinder can be seen in terms of towing capacity. Indeed, the Kia Sorento is limited to 3,500 lb while the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas can tow up to 5,000 lb.
