The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta was improved this year and features a wide range of new features including a new front and rear design, new colours, and improvements inside. It also received a more powerful engine that improves upon what was already the most powerful engine in the segment.
The new 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged now delivers 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque compared to 147 horsepower in the previous model. The torque remains the highest in the segment which means the Jetta will continue to be the quickest, sharpest, sportiest compact sedan you can buy in the segment as a standard model.
That said, the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is also more efficient despite the increase in power. The new Jetta has quite a few tricks up its sleeve to make it more efficient despite the boost in power. Among the numerous changes, the most significant are the increase in compression ratio, an improved Miller Cycle, and higher injection pressure.
Compression ratio
The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta’s engine has a higher compression ratio of 11.5 to one versus 10 to one in the previous model. The impact of a higher compression ratio is that the engine can gain more power out of each drop of fuel, meaning that it needs less fuel to deliver its power.
Moreover, the modified Miller Cycle means that the Jetta’s engine breathes easier. Air flow is a critical component of engine efficiency, and anytime you can improve air flow, you will get better fuel consumption.
The fuel delivery system now has 350 bars of injection pressure, a 150-bars improvement over last year which means that cylinder temperatures are reduced, and the fuel mixture is optimized for a more efficient burn.
New special cylinders also reduce friction, and a new cooling strategy helps the engine achieve the optimal fuel consumption temperature more quickly. Lastly, a new VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry) turbocharger offers better boost pressure and a more efficient overall performance to, again, improve how fuel is used to deliver power.
The Jetta is more efficient while also being more powerful. What’s not to love about that?
