There are very few cars that deliver the kind of raw driving pleasure combined with everyday usability at a sub-$50k price point. In fact, one could argue that the only car to do so is the Volkswagen Golf R, an AWD pocket rocket that has always been near the top of any enthusiast’s wish list.
Now, Volkswagen is turning to the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R and the German automaker hasn’t just refreshed its flagship, it has redesigned it from the wheels up. The new MK8 Golf R is built on the revised version of the MQB that was also used for the current Golf R. In other words, the new 2022 Volkswagen Golf R is the same size as the outgoing model.
It’s a lot more powerful, however. It features a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder delivers 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque compared to 288 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque in the previous model. Volkswagen also improved the DSG dual-clutch gearbox to make shifts faster, but the 2022 Golf R will also come with a six-speed manual option.
The new Golf R also gets improved spring and anti-roll bar rates as well as a sportier steering feel. The rear axle gets an impressive new rear-drive unit which can transfer torque from side to side, meaning that up to 100 percent of the engine’s torque can be sent to just one wheel. Volkswagen has translated this ability into a new Drift Mode for the Golf R. A new Race Mode is also offered.
Inside, the Golf R has been completely redesigned and the overall feel is much more luxurious. The new 2022 Golf R will arrive in Canada some time in 2021.
