When it comes to electric vehicle development, Volkswagen has always been at the forefront. It was one of the first mainstream automakers to introduce a fully-electric vehicle when it launched the e-Golf a few years ago, and it is now pushing the envelope even further with the brand-new Volkswagen ID.4, which for 2023 receives many improvements. A new version with a smaller battery is coming, and the all-wheel drive ID.4 features even more range and even more features.
Like the Volkswagen e-Golf, the Volkswagen ID.4 focuses on being a good car first and foremost. The German automaker does not want the electric drivetrain to be the only thing that distinguishes its electric cars, so it builds cars that would be great even if they were powered by a combustion engine.
A luxury electric vehicle packed with versatility and spaciousness is a perfect description of the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. Even with a combustion engine, this vehicle would sell well. It does, however, offer all the benefits of electrification. The ID.4 was designed to be an EV right from the start, using the Volkswagen MEB electric vehicle platform. As a result, the chassis and structure are configured to maximize EV efficiency and performance. In its top-of-the-line version, the Volkswagen ID.4 has electric motors on both axles, making it an all-wheel-drive vehicle. It is also offered in RWD trim, and starting in 2023, a new, smaller 62-kWh battery is offered. The new battery is offered in the new, more accessible version of the ID.4, starting at $43,995.
Back to the AWD version, its electric motors are powered by an 82-kWh battery that translates into 394 km of range for AWD models and 422 km for RWD models. That said, for 2023, the range will improve to over 400 kilometres, although we are still waiting for the official numbers. As well as offering impressive charging capabilities on a home charger, the VW ID.4 can add 100 kilometres of range in just ten minutes on a DC Fast Charger.
