Read more2022 Volkswagen Jetta vs 2022 Hyundai Elantra: something new under the German sun
The Volkswagen Jetta has been with us for a little over 40 years, having been born in 1981. It has a lot of experience, which makes it difficult for rivals to compete with it. Take Hyundai's Elantra, which, despite its interesting qualities and a redesign last year, is still less relevant in many respects than the German representative.
And bad news for the Elantra, the Jetta is getting major upgrades for 2022. It's safe to say that it's a beautiful year under the German sky.
A new powertrain
The 2022 Jetta gets a new engine, a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, the same one that debuted in the Taos SUV. Replacing the 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, the slightly larger mill shows up with 158 horsepower instead of 147 and boasts the same torque at 184 lb-ft. Volkswagen promises smoother performance and livelier starts and acceleration for the model. That's interesting, and compared to the Elantra's 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine that boasts 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, it's easy to see where the strength lies with the base versions of both products.
As for the transmissions that can be paired with it, we're talking about a six-speed powertrain or an eight-speed automatic transmission. In both cases, the Elantra does not have such efficient organs (it offers a similar manual, as well as a CVT).
Design tweaks
The Elantra has a style that stands out. It's bold. At the rear, the signature look is very pleasing to the eye. From the front, however, let's just say that it's not unanimous. But do you want a model that looks good on one side and not the other? With the Jetta, you get a car with harmonious styling from front to back.
Better yet, we're getting an update for 2022, so the Volkswagen compact is unveiled with a tweaked face. It will be easy to recognize, because alongside the brand's logo, you can now see chrome strips, which adds a touch of class to the presentation. With the GLI version, red accents have been added to these additions, always allowing this model to stand out.
And speaking of differentiation, each version of the Jetta (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline and GLI) gets new wheels for 2022. Really, confusion is going to be impossible.
Even on board, the 2022 Jetta sees new fabric seats join the base version while the brand's Virtual Cockpit is on board each variant (8- or 10-inch screen, depending on the version).
Driving
Finally, there's another element that sets the Jetta apart from the Elantra; the driving experience. It's simple: on board Volkswagen's flagship, all the sensations of the road are communicated to us with surprising speed, so that we enjoy ourselves more with every kilometer we cover.
