If you haven't seen gas prices rise lately, welcome to earth. The past few weeks have seen the cost per liter soar to unprecedented levels, all fueled by the war in Ukraine.
With this situation out of control, the performance of vehicles at the pump is becoming a topic of interest to all buyers. In many cases, the low fuel consumption of one model will give it the advantage over another that would have been preferred initially.
The Volkswagen Jetta is a good example. The fuel economy it offers is so exceptional that it gives any buyer pause.
And what is its secret? Let's find out.
It went a bit under the radar last year, but Volkswagen has decided to replace the Jetta's engine for 2022, all in the name of efficiency and economy. So, the 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder has been replaced by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder.
The change is minimal, but you win on all counts. First, there's a gain in power with the switch to the larger block, from 147 and 158 horsepower (torque remains at 184 lb-ft). Better yet, fuel economy has made gains across the board.
With the six-speed manual transmission, the new engine consumes only 8.1 L/100 km in the city and 5.5 L/100 km on the highway, for an average of 6.9 L/100 km. That's very impressive.
Opting for the eight-speed automatic transmission gives you a better rating in the city with 7.6 L/100 km. On the highway, it's 5.7 liters. In total, we're talking about an average of 6.7 liters for the entire drive.
Note that these figures are conversions from American models, but they are still to the nearest decimal point.
Above all, these are numbers that will allow you to breathe. This is especially true if you're used to racking up the miles on the highway. It's actually easy to keep your average under 6 L/100 km.
